Tips & Insights — Chicago Shopping & Travel

Eating Healthy

It’s easy to forget about diets and make poor choices regarding the foods that are available to us when we travel, so we’ve compiled a short list for healthy eating tips for your Chicago shopping trip. 1) Pack a variety of nutritious foods including fruits, raw vegetables, crackers, granola bars…quick solutions for satisfying an appetite whether you fly or drive. 2) Upon arrival at the hotel, skip the mini-bar. If your hotel offers a Continental breakfast, select fruits, cereals and proteins such as eggs. 3) When you dine out, remember to eat only when hungry. Even the great Chicago restaurants occasionally serve overwhelmingly large portions. If you indulge on one meal, scale back on the next. 4) When possible, avoid large meals at night. When your body slows down and prepares for sleep, it also burns calories less efficiently. Pass on the bread basket at dinner. Choose fish or poultry, and try to eat lots of vegetables.

Shoes

Chicago Destination Shopping Club located at http://www.chicago-dsc.com, includes a shoe shopping category on its website. The trend for 2008 is all about heels…a myriad of options – wedges, stilettos and sculpted forms, in textured and colorful finishes. Look for the latest trends in a huge selection of Chicago stores including Akira (State Street & Bucktown), Bloomingdale’s (Michigan Ave.), Fratelli Rossetti (Michigan Ave.), Jimmy Choo (Oak Street), Lori’s (Lincoln Park), Nine West Outlet (Lincoln Park) and Nordstrom (Michigan Ave.).

From $600 Phone to Carrying Case

Now that you have one of the coolest, most talked about cell phones on the market, you need a case. Many designers have taken note of the trend and demand for stylish cases to caress that phone in a stylish manner. At the high end, Louis Vuitton offers alligator leather cases for around $1,100. Depending on the size and model, you can purchase other styles ranging from $15 – $50 at Nokia or the Apple Store. See all these stores and more at http://www.chicago-dsc.com.

Traveling with Special Items on Airlines

With many passengers still expecting to bring almost any item on board despite the crackdown in safety and security, we thought it would be important to recap rules and restrictions for most airlines. Please note that airlines in foreign countries may have different regulations.

1.Alcoholic Beverages – Passengers are not allowed to take alcoholic beverages with more than 70% alcohol content in a carry-on or checked luggage.

2.Knives & Tools – Pack knives and tools in your checked luggage. Sheath or securely wrap any sharp edges so they do not injure baggage handlers and security officials.

3.Currency, Coins, Valuable Jewelry – If you are carrying valuable items, ask the security officer to screen you and your carry-on luggage in private. This will maintain your security and avoid scrutiny.

4.Musical Instruments – You may bring musical instruments as carry-on or as checked baggage, but first check with your airline prior to your flight to ensure your instrument meets the size requirements for their aircraft. Security must x-ray or physically screen your instrument, so be prepared.

 A Fire to Win

A Fire to Win

Woody Hayes was one of the greatest football coaches in history—and one of the most fascinating. More than a brilliant coach, he was a complicated, contradictory man. The former history teacher ran his football empire as an absolute monarchy, but had a surprisingly altruistic side, hidden from the public, . and author John Lombardo uses his extensive sports-writing experience to craft an accurate portrait of one of the most complex and fascinating figures in football. First and foremost, Woody Hayes was a coach—and his achievements are stunning. While at Ohio State, he won five national titles, and thirteen Big Ten Conference championships, made eight Rose Bowl appearances, and earned two national Coach of the Year awards. Moreover, Hayes’s lifetime coaching record, 238–72–10, puts him in the first rank of college coaching immortals. No other coach won more games in a shorter period. Countless interviews of former players, assistant coaches, and friends shape the image of Hayes and his career, which spanned the mid-1940s to the late 1970s during a tremendous period of change in American society. A Fire to Win is an honest and revealing biography of Hayes, a man who ranks in the pantheon of football coaches. An easy-to-read, objective look at one of Ohio’s most powerful, complex, admired, feared, and contradictory figures. — The Columbus Dispatch A sympathetic yet evenhanded examination of a modern coaching giant. — Booklist Insightful and comprehensive biography. — The New York Sun Contradictions, of course, are what make Hayes fascinating. And Lombardo delves into those contradictions with a cell biologist’s eye for detailand a landscape painter’s eye for perspective. —Chicago Tribune

Sometimes it takes an outsider to capture the essence of an individual place. The impressions of travelers in particular have a special allure–unanticipated and serendipitous, their views get to the heart of a particular region because nothing to them is routine or expected. First published in 1933 by the University of Chicago Press to mark the occasion of the Century of Progress Exhibition, As Others See Chicago consists of writings culled from over a thousand men and women who visited the city and commented on the best and worst it had to offer, from the skyscrapers to the stockyards. Originally compiled by Bessie Louise Pierce, the first major historian of Chicago, and featuring her own incisive commentary, the volume brings together the impressions of visitors to Chicago over two and a half centuries, from the early years of Westward Expansion to the height of the Great Depression. In addition to writings from better known personalities such as Rudyard Kipling and Waldo Frank, the book collects the opinions of missionaries, aristocrats, journalists, and politicians–observers who were perfectly placed to comment on the development of the city, its inhabitants, and well known events that would one day define Chicago history, such as the Great Fire of 1871 and the 1893 World’s Fair. Taking us back to a time when Chicago was more astonishing than the wildest visions of the most vagrant imaginations, As Others See Chicago offers an enthralling portrait of an enduring American metropolis.

Barrio: Photographs from Chicago's Pilsen and Little Village

Barrio: Photographs from Chicago’s Pilsen and Little Village

$35

In 1988 photographer Paul D’Amato was driving around Chicago with his camera when he decided to follow Halsted Street into Pilsen, the city’s largest Mexican neighborhood. Intrigued by the barrio and neighboring Little Village, he began to take photographs and would continue to do so off and on for the next fourteen years. D’Amato started with the public life of the neighborhood: women and children in the streets, open fire hydrants, and graffiti. But later–after he got to know the area’s Mexican residents better–he was allowed to take more intimate photos of people at work, families at weddings and parties, and even gang members. Barrio collects ninety of these striking color images along with D’Amato’s fascinating account of his time photographing Mexican Chicago and his acceptance–often grudging, after threatened violence–into the heart of the city’s Mexican community. Some of the photos here are beautifully composed and startling–visual narratives that are surreal and dreamlike, haunting and mythic. Others, like those D’Amato took while shadowing graffiti artists in the subway, are far more immediate and improvisational. With a foreword by author Stuart Dybek that places D’Amato’s work in the context of the Pilsen and Little Village that Dybek has elsewhere captured so memorably, this book offers a penetrating, evocative, and overall streetwise portrait of two iconic and enduring Hispanic neighborhoods.

 Center Field on Fire

Center Field on Fire

$2.95

As entertaining as a Lou Piniella tantrum and as juicy as a Gaylord Perry spitball, Center Field on Fire chronicles the remarkable 32-year career of major league umpire Dave Phillips, as written with veteran sportswriter Rob Rains. Phillips walked out of the umpires’ dressing room ready to start the second game of a doubleheader at Chicago’s Comiskey Park on July 12, 1979, only to witness center field on fire. Disco Demolition Night–a promotion created by White Sox owner Bill Veeck–had resulted in the outfield literally going up in smoke as thousands of disco records were burned between the two games of the doubleheader. That night was only one of the many episodes experienced by Phillips, who was also behind the plate during the notorious George Brett pine tar bat incident. Phillips describes how he once challenged Billy Martin to a fight, why he ejected Gaylord Perry for throwing a spitball, and how confiscating Albert Belle’s corked bat led to a robbery and a scandal. In a book filled with humorous anecdotes, Phillips also offers his opinions about some of the most controversial personalities in baseball, including commissioner Bud Selig, all-time hits leader Pete Rose, and former umpires union president Richie Phillips. Dave Phillips worked four World Series, six League Championship Series, and three Division Series, making Center Field on Fire a book no baseball fan will want to miss.

Czechs of Chicagoland

$21.99

Chicago was once the second-largest Bohemian city outside the Czech lands. The Czechs first settled, serendipitously, behind the notorious O”Leary barn. Spared the Great Fire of 1871, they were displaced several blocks south by the ensuing land crush. There they built more permanent quarters in the community that became known as Pilsen, a neighborhood whose name and architecture survive to recall its Bohemian origins. The thriving Czechs soon began a century-long move westward from Lawndale to Cicero to Berwyn, and today they flourish across the western suburbs. From the desolation of the 1915 Eastland disaster, in which hundreds of victims were of Czech descent, to the triumphant Depression-era election of Czech-born mayor AntonAA-n C ermAAk, Czechs of Chicagoland depicts how the Czech community and its great leaders, benevolent societies, and charitable and social organizations have shaped and continue to shape the course of Chicago”s history.

Wax on…. Jen Nakamura Taylor thought she left behind her awkward past of growing up half-Japanese, half-white in a small Southern town when she moved north to produce a popular Chicago television show. But when she gets word that her Southern Belle cousin is marrying Kevin Peterson, the very boy Jen loved-with-a-capital-L for years, she realizes she can’t run from her past forever. Wax off…. Riley — Jen’s cute British friend from work — seems just the ticket; even his girlfriend thinks it’s a good idea. But as Jen and Riley whistle on down to Dixie, sparks start to fly. Add to the fire the grown-up but still charming Kevin Peterson, who appears to have a soft spot for Jen, and, well, whoa. It’s going to take everything Jen has (and a lot of help from the Karate Kid -wisdom of her pop culture hero Mr. Miyagi) to survive the meeting of past and present, and of North and Far East and South…where Jen finally learns to come to terms with her heritage, her love life, and herself.
