. . . extraordinarily far-reaching. . . . highly accessible. – Notes No one has written this way about music in a long, long time. Lucid, insightful, with real spiritual, political, intellectual, and emotional grasp of the whole picture. A book about why music matters, and how, and to whom. -Dave Marsh, author of Louie, Louie and Born to Run: The Bruce Springsteen Story This book is urgently needed: a comprehensive look at the various forms of black popular music, both as music and as seen in a larger social context. No one can do this better than Craig Werner. -Henry Louis Gates, Jr., W.E.B. Du Bois Professor of the Humanities, Harvard University Werner has mastered the extremely difficult art of writing about music as both an aesthetic and social force that conveys, implies, symbolizes, and represents ideas as well as emotion, but without reducing its complexities and ambiguities to merely didactic categories. – African American Review A Change Is Gonna Come is the story of more than four decades of enormously influential black music, from the hopeful, angry refrains of the Freedom movement, to the slick pop of Motown; from the disco inferno to the Million Man March; from Woodstock’s Summer of Love to the war in Vietnam and the race riots that inspired Marvin Gaye to write What’s Going On. Originally published in 1998, A Change Is Gonna Come drew the attention of scholars and general readers alike. This new edition, featuring four new and updated chapters, will reintroduce Werner’s seminal study of black music to a new generation of readers. Craig Werner is Professor of Afro-American Studies at the University of Wisconsin, and author of many books, including Playing the Changes: From Afro-Modernism to the Jazz Impulse and Up Around the Bend: An Oral History of Creedence Clearwater Revival. His most recent book is Higher Ground: Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin, Curtis Mayfield, and the Rise and Fall of

Preston Love’s resume reads like a Who’s Who of American music: member of the Count Basie Band during its heyday in the forties, studio musician in Los Angeles, cohort of Jo Jones, Lester Young, Ray Charles, and Dizzy Gillespie, and back-up player for Marvin Gaye, the Temptations, Smokey Robinson, Aretha Franklin, Gladys Knight, and Stevie Wonder. In a distinctive and passionate voice, Love chronicles not only the famous personalities, but also the forgotten geniuses, and the little known world of the territory bands, tirelessly performing in outposts like St. Cloud, Minnesota, Guthrie, Oklahoma, and Honey Creek, Iowa. Love’s story highlights significant facets of African American history: the central importance of the family in musical development, institutional racism in American popular culture, and the interracial nature of the music world, providing an important view into the evolution of jazz and the Motown sound.

Among rock”s greats who have performed at one or more of the Fillmores include Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, the Grateful Dead, Janis Joplin, Led Zeppelin, Tom Petty, John Fogarty, the Who, Pink Floyd, and the Doors. Prominent other-than-rock musicians including Willie Nelson, Aretha Franklin, Otis Redding, Muddy Waters, Miles Davis, and dozens more were just as proud to have played the Fillmore. Black Eden

Black Eden

$19.95

Black Eden chronicles the history of Idlewild, one of the many American black communities founded during the aftermath of the Civil War. As Michigan’s most popular black resort, Idlewild functioned as a gathering place for African Americans and, more important, as a touchstone of black identity and culture. Benjamin C. Wilson and Lewis Walker examine Idlewild’s significance within a historical context, as well as the town’s revitalization efforts and the need for comprehensive planning in future development. In a segregated America, Idlewild became a place where black audiences could see rising black entertainers. Profusely illustrated with photos from the authors’ personal collections, Black Eden provides a lengthy discussion about the crucial role that Idlewild played in the careers of such artists as Louis Armstrong, B. B. King, Sammy Davis Jr., Jackie Wilson, Aretha Franklin, and Della Reese. Fundamentally, the book explores issues involved in living in a segregated society, and the consequences of the civil rights movement, the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and subsequent integration, and integration vs. racial solidarity. The authors ask: Did integration kill Idlewild? but suggest that other factors contributed to its decline.

Boogaloo: The Quintessence of American Popular Music

Boogaloo: The Quintessence of American Popular Music

$22.11

Boogaloo–the synonym of choice among the cognoscenti for rhythm and blues–is a stylish and profound meditation on the art, influence, and commerce of black American popular music. At once deeply knowing and keenly observant, Arthur Kempton reveals the tensions between the sacred and the profane at the heart of soul music, and the complex centrality of Aframericans in the evolution of our mass musical culture. What that culture is all about, who owns it, and who gets paid–these are issues of moment in his epic narrative. Kempton brilliantly traces the interconnections among a century’s worth of signal personalities, events, and achievements: from Thomas A. Dorsey, the so-called Father of Gospel Music, whose career ( Got to Know How to Work Your Show ) sheds light on Mahalia Jackson, Aretha Franklin, and James Brown, among others, to the rise of that handsome Negro lad, Sam Cooke (perhaps the greatest of soul singers) and his definitive crossover dreams; from Berry Gordy Jr.’s infatuation with Doris Day and his sharp business plan to capture and exploit the sounds of young America through Motown ( It’s What’s in the Grooves That Counts ) to the founding of Stax Records and Memphis Soul by a white farm kid who grew up dreaming of being a country fiddler; from the visionary funk of George Clinton to the ascendancy of hip hop ( Sharecropping in Wonderland ), the murders of Tupac Shakur and Biggie Smalls, and the story of Death Row Records. Boogaloo is a monumental work, informed by a rare fierceness of intellect, which debunks many a myth and canard about our popular music heritage even as it enlarges our understanding of its quintessence.

 Chronicles Of King Curtis

Chronicles Of King Curtis

$15.89

Chronicles of King Curtis is an historical account of the life and times of the greatest saxophone player in rock and roll. King Curtis was a musical renaissance man: a multiple-saxophonist, performer, composer, arranger, producer, band leader for himself and Aretha Franklin, session man, talent scout, publisher, vocalist, guitarist and businessman. His impact on saxophonists was colossal. His style was riveting, his tone rich, his playing passionate. His versatility extended to jazz, blues, funk, R&B, soul, country, spirituals and pop. A master craftsman who blew a funnel of funk like the world never heard, his volcanic streams of sound created a whirlwind. He mentored musicians yet fastidiously studied melody, harmony, and theory. He was on a spiritual quest while simultaneously trapped in a material world. He tapped into a reservoir of soul and blew his top. This book for the first time presents an overview of this incredible musician.

 Come Away With Me

Come Away With Me

$10.98

Come Away With Me blends elements of jazz, soul, country, and folk-pop in a warm, unselfconscious amalgam, and erases musical boundaries in the process. Norah Jones, on vocals, piano and Wurlitzer electric piano, is backed seamlessly by a skilled supporting cast. The adroit and understated production is by Arif Mardin, the veteran producer/arranger of landmark recordings by Aretha Franklin, Dusty Springfield, Laura Nyro, Roberta Flack, and Willie Nelson, to name a few.STUDIO NOTES: The record is comprised of material recorded in May 2001 with producer Craig Street, and in August 2001 with producer Arif Mardin. Reflecting on the studio sessions Norah says, I feel like this record is a pretty full expression of where I am now. It’s music of mine, and many of my friends. Also some jazz standards and covers. The environnment was great. I felt very comfortable with all the musicians. It was a real collaborative effort. It felt like we were making a record in my living room. Most of it was recorded pretty much live, with extra guitar and voice overdubs here and there. I don’t know if it can be classified as jazz really, or pop music. Hopefully it can be appreciated by fans of both. It has lots of different elements. In the end though, it’s all about the songs. I think they’re all very strong songs. I’m very lucky to have friends who are great songwriters. The originals ended up being the bulk of the album. A few of them are mine, but Jesse and Lee contributed greatly as well.

HAL LEONARD 50 Years of Soul Songbook – HL 14037674

$19.99

James Brown, Otis Redding, Solomon Burke and Aretha Franklin all carried soul into the golden period of the 1960s and from then on the genre would be a permanent fixture in the international pop music landscape. So. get ready to enjoy 50 years of pure soul, the electrifying musical hybrid that never went out of fashion!

I Never Loved a Man the Way I Love You

I Never Loved a Man the Way I Love You

$17.99

The album that earned soul legend Aretha Franklin her first major hits, I Never Loved A Man the Way I Loved You was a pop and soul music milestone. Apart from its status as a hit record, the album also had a much wider cultural impact. By early 1967, when the album was released, the Civil Rights movement was well underway; Aretha’s music gave it its theme song. And the single Respect became a passionate call to arms for the burgeoning feminist movement. Dobkin has unearthed a wonderful story of the creation of an album that goes far beyond anything that’s been written about The Queen of Soul before. With scores of fresh interviews–including ones with the session musicians from Muscle Shoals who recorded with Aretha– I Never Loved A Man the Way I Love You is the story of a great artistic achievement. It’s also a biography of a star who is both more complex and determined than her modern image as a diva indicates.

Sisters are doing it for themselves, Aretha Franklin and Annie Lennox sang a while back, and nowhere in today’s music is this more true than with SHeDAISY, three Utah-born siblings, Kristyn, Kelsi and Kassidy Osborn–who’ve harmonized together their whole lives and worked the past dozen years in Nashville to become the artistic force behind the groundbreaking new release, Knock On The Sky. Kristyn wrote or co-wrote every track on the very personal second album, which SHeDAISY co-produced with the returning Dan Huff. In fourteen compelling tracks, the album tells the story of a woman’s search for self, the fragility of the female ego, coming to terms with her own sexuality, free agency, the euphoria of new love, love that is unattainable, life’s seductive highs and destructive lows, regret, revenge and remorse. Preventing the mood from becoming too somber, though, is that indomitable SHeDAISY spirit. Musically, the Osborne sisters demonstrate that as a group they’ve absorbed a wide range of influences from their female forbears, from the gospel-tinged belting of Aretha and Annie, to the blood-kin harmonies of the Judds, the poignant pop of Karen Carpenter, and the rockin’ Wilson sisters of Heart, to the homespun sass of classic Dolly Parton and the acerbic wit of Bette Midler. Summarizing SHeDAISY’s goal for Knock On The Sky, Kristyn says, We like to think of each song as a mini-movie. It needs to be entertaining, whether it makes you feel emotional or whether it makes you want to dance or whether it makes you want to call your mom and say thank you. While Kelsi and Kassidy nod their heads in agreement, she adds, We want you to ve able to picture things while you’re listening. And the only way to do that is for us to paint it sonically with every single song. Let’s hope that SHeDAISY’s Osborn sisters never run out of paint!

Bobby Womack is a legend–a phenomenally gifted singer, songwriter, and guitarist with 40 albums and 30 million record sales to his name. A protege of Sam Cooke, Womack wrote classics that include Lookin’ for a Love and It’s All Over Now (a smash-hit for the Rolling Stones). Their success helped make him a star, but ongoing battles with drugs and the record industry nearly destroyed him. Behind his music lies a life scorched by tragedy, beginning with his impoverished childhood in Cleveland, to his years touring and recording with the greats–including James Brown, Jimi Hendrix, Sam Cooke, Aretha Franklin, Wilson Pickett, Eric Clapton, and Elvis Presley–and through the years of drugs, partying, and riotous abuse, this is the authentic voice of a major soul artist.

 Music Grooves

Music Grooves

$204.84

A collaboration between two of the most interesting voices in ethnomusicology, this volume explores two powerful themes: the groove of firsthand experience and participation in music and the groove of musical mediation and commodification through recordings. A number of the authors’ most important essays, all revised and updated, are introduced and framed by dialogues that supply additional context, introduce retrospective concerns, and reveal connections. This format signals the authors’ desire for a more reflexive, experimental discourse on music and society and invites readers to join their conversations. Music Grooves ranges from jazz, blues, polka, soul, rock, world beat, rap, karaoke, and other familiar genres to major scholarly debates in music theory, ethnomusicology, and popular culture studies. The authors develop and create links between the fields of ethnomusicology and popular culture studies and relate the contents of musics from America, Greece, Cuba, Africa, and Papua New Guinea to artists as diverse as James Brown, Aretha Franklin, L’il Wally Jagiello, Bo Diddley, Walt Solek, Madonna, Paul Simon, Miles Davis, Thelonious Monk, and Billie Holiday. Keil and Feld offer a fascinating view of the shaping of central ideas and terms in ethnomusicology such as engendered feeling, interpretive moves, participatory discrepancies, iconicity of style, people’s music, schizophonia, and lift-up-over sounding. From Keil’s critique of Leonard Meyer’s musicological approach to Feld’s recent work on world beat, this volume covers an array of vital issues in media studies, musicology and ethnomusicology, popular culture, anthropology, and sociology. It willinterest anyone concerned with the nature and meaning of music in the modern world.

No Coward Soldiers: Black Cultural Politics in Postwar America

No Coward Soldiers: Black Cultural Politics in Postwar America

$21.06

In a vibrant and passionate exploration of the twentieth-century civil rights and black power eras in American history, Waldo Martin uses cultural politics as a lens through which to understand the African-American freedom struggle. In black culture, argues Martin, we see the debate over the profound tension at the core of black identity: the duality of being at once both American and African. And in the transformative postwar period, the intersection between culture and politics became increasingly central to the African-American fight for equality. In freedom songs, in the exuberance of an Aretha Franklin concert, in Faith Ringgold’s exploration of race and sexuality, the personal and social became the political. Martin explores the place of black culture in this vision and examines the multiple ways in which various forms of expressive culture and African-American cultural figures influenced consciousness and helped effect social action. From the music of John Coltrane and James Brown to the visual art of Jacob Lawrence and Betye Saar to the dance movements of Alvin Ailey and Arthur Mitchell, Martin discusses how, why, and with what consequences culture became a critical battle site in the freedom struggle. And in a fascinating epilogue, he draws the thread of black cultural politics into today’s hip-hop culture. This engaging book brings a new perspective to the civil rights and black power eras, while illuminating the broader history of American and global freedom struggles.

 Phenomenal Ruthie Foster

Phenomenal Ruthie Foster

Superlatives are rare in album titles, and for good reason: unless you’re a living legend or a legend-in-the-making like the Man in Black (1958′s The Fabulous Johnny Cash) or the Queen of Soul (1962′s The Electrifying Aretha Franklin), you’re all but begging for a crash course in humility. So if you’re going to stick a word like phenomenal in front of your name on a record cover, you damn well better have the goods to back it up. Those are some big shoes! laughs Ruthie Foster, who, just for the record, is really one of the most humble and down-to-earth artists you could ever meet, phenomenal or otherwise. She admits to initially having quite a few reservations about calling her fifth album The Phenomenal Ruthie Foster, crediting both her producer, noted Austin-based swamp music guitarist Malcolm Papa Mali Welbourne, and her label, Houston’s Blue Corn Records, for making that particular gutsy call. As for how they came up with it, well…just give it a listen, and you’ll understand. The big shoes just fit – so much so, that calling this particular record by this particular woman at this particular time in her life and career anything but phenomenal would be akin to false advertising.
